History

On 2023, The department "Parallel Algorithms and Machine Learning with Neurotechnology Laboratory" is successor of two other departments: department of "Parallel Algorithms" and department of "Information technologies for Sensor Data Processing".

Department of "Parallel Algorithms" was established in 1985. It was founded as a department on High-performance Systems and Algorithms for Parallel Processing (HSAPP). The main idea was to coordinate research in the field of Computer Science and Computer Technology done by scientists from Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgarian Universities and some Institutes belonging to the Industry. In a short time many senior scientists as well as young mathematicians and computer science specialists were attached to the group and in only one year HSAPP took a leading position in Bulgaria in the field of Computer Science and Computer Technology. In 1999 HSAPP was separated in three parts - Department on Parallel Algorithms (DPA), Department on Scientific Computations and Department on High-performance Computer Architectures.

DPA has been, and still is, an active participant in a number of research and educational projects of the EU programs FP5, INCO-COPERNICUS, GO EAST GO WEST, etc. as well as in NATO Scientific Programs for cooperation between EC and Eastern Europe.

A lot of the scientists of DPA has been on long-term specializations in USA, UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, etc. The staff of DPA participated in the organization of many international conferences and workshops.

The Information Technologies for Sensor Data Processing (ITSDP) Department was founded in 1988. During the years the team solved many theoretical and practical problems involving sensor data processing for different Bulgarian customers.

On July, 2 2015, the Scientific council of IICT - BAS decided to integrate MMSIP with the team of "Signal Processing and Pattern Recognition" Department in a Department with the name "Mathematical Methods for Sensor Information Processing". The team of former Department became a thematic group of MMSIP. At the beginning of 2020 the MMSIP was renamed to "Information Technologies for Sensor Data Processing".

We consider R&D in joint innovative projects with industry partners in Bulgaria and Europe as a promising area of cooperation and scientific solution verification.

The main objective is to improve the excellence in education, science and technology in our research fields.
